Stan West, asking whether a deep regard for the past can keep us from seeing a great opportunity in the present, suggests that the current dismantling of this nation, the unraveling of our culture, and the erosion of religious values are temporary, only a prelude for something more permanent. We need to examine our assumptions about our understanding of the spiritual organism we comprehend as the church. Does the church, in its present configuration, have an identity crisis? Within the greater church of God, barriers are caused by presumptuous “empire building,” causing a great deal of difficulty for our young people, unable to freely fraternize with other young people in other branches with the greater church of God. Jesus Christ, totally smashing cultural barriers and ancient prejudices as he fraternized with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, instructed her about how to access living water. Similarly, we need to make sure that our deep regard for the past does not let us to miss out on current or future opportunities to bear spiritual fruit, realizing that we are God’s children (a work in progress) and co-heirs with Christ.
