Dave Havir, urging that we learn lessons from history, focuses upon four historical events from the Bible: (01) Israel’s coming out of Egypt. When things go well, we tend to forget God. We need to learn to trust God, remembering that He and not our own strength brought us out of bondage. (02) Jesus Christ, suffered, died, and was resurrected for us, releasing us from spiritual bondage. We need to be careful not to denigrate or minimize this monumental effort for us. (03) Jerusalem’s destruction in 70AD, having a dual perspective, preparing people for horrible future destruction. (04) The origin of nations and their specific role in the outline of history. In North America, excessive taxation led to a massive rebellion on the part of the colonies. This sermon goes into specific detail of the events and personalities (including the bonding and estrangements within families) leading to the Revolution. Unless political change is accompanied by true spiritual revival, all we do each election is exchange one group of scoundrels with another group of scoundrels.
