Neil McIver, reflecting on the winding down of the war in Iraq, asks rhetorically whether America was right getting involved in another nation’s quest for freedom adding that we consider whether we would want others to intervene in our internal affairs if we were oppressed. In the battles that shaped our country, including the War for Independence and the Civil War, much blood and treasure were sacrificed to acquire liberty. The signers of the Declaration of Independence sacrificed deeply of their blood, treasure, and sacred honor. Jesus Christ paid an awesome price for our release from the bondage of sin and death. If we cling to the truth, the truth shall set us free. True freedom does not consist of doing what we want when we want, filling our lusts (license to sin), but consists of being free from sin and our carnal natures (the source of hurt, pain, and grueling slavery) through committing ourselves to His covenant. True Godly freedom cannot be attained in a carnal context (waling in the flesh), but must be attained by walking in the spirit. True freedom consists of Jesus Christ living His life in us by means of God’s Holy Spirit. As God’s called-out ones, the collective Bride of Christ, we will have true liberty as we conform to His will. Only Jesus, by washing away our sins, can make us free. His written word is the ticket or roadmap to true spiritual freedom.
