Dave Havir, focusing in I Corinthians 9:19-23, asks rhetorically how effective we are in representing the kingdom of God, the Father and the Son, God’s saving grace, God’s spiritual law, the Bible, and God’s saving message. In short, what kind of a light are we? Paul considered himself free from all men, free from cultural and religious shackles. We must be free in our own minds. Even though Paul was free, he chose to be a servant to all men, not pushing his way, but choosing to co-exist, with a view of gently leading people to Christ. We need to have both good information and a good approach. We are judged on both what we know and how we use this information when we approach people. We can have honorable goals and good approaches, but lack information. We need to have both, loving God with all our heart and our neighbors as ourselves. We need to have both head and heart knowledge, augmenting our prayer, Bible study, meditation, and fasting, learning how to serve and help others with sensitivity and empathy, representing the kingdom of God to different cultures and different walks of life, walking a mile in their moccasins, so to speak, without losing our own identity.
