Ron Feaker, asking the rhetorical question, “Are we faithful Christians?” suggests that it is not easy in this evil world to follow this noble pursuit. After our parents, Adam and Eve, partook of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, sin has complicated our lives. Christ, the second Adam, did resist the temptation of Satan that had previously up-ended our original parents, using the protection of scripture. God will never demand more from us than what we are capable of performing spiritually, as is evidenced by the parable of the talents. If we do not produce with what capabilities God has given us, we will guarantee our rejection. We cannot timidly hide these capabilities nor can we hedge our bets, keeping one foot in the world and one foot in God’s kingdom. We need to learn to take criticism patiently for living righteously, striving for saintly perfection, a commitment we make at our baptism. Baptism signifies our death, burial, and resurrection. Hopefully, our supply of God’s Holy Spirit has grown rather than attenuated since our baptism as we take advantages of the opportunities God has given to each of us, striving to follow God.
