Reg Killingley reports that 41% of Americans believe that Christ will return to earth by 2050 (Pew Research Center poll). The sermon takes a turn, examining the source of the adversarial attitude found in Satan, the father of liars and murderers, and then into an account of the Greek mythological figure Kronos, the offspring of Gaya (the earth) and Uranus (heaven). Kronos, at the request of his disgruntled mother Gaya, offers to emasculate Uranus, leaving Kronos in the role of the father. Fearing a prophecy that the same fate will befall him, Kronos swallows all of his future offspring until he is tricked to swallow a stone. Consequently, his offspring Zeus deposes him, binding him in tartarus (the place angels were bound in II Peter 2:4). Mythology, though often distorted, has its basis in true events, shared by the cultures of the world, manifested in various parallel mythologies. In the Decalogue, the bridge commandment (to honor father and mother) governing relationships between God and our fellow beings, was not observed by the adversary (whether termed Satan or Kronos), leading him to murder, commit adultery, lying, and coveting. Lying and murder are inextricably related, as is seen in Cain’s murder of Abel and the subsequent cover up, the false witnesses at trial of Jesus Christ, and Absalom’s murder of Amnon and treachery against his father David. We must diligently reject this duo of lies and murder in favor of the One who is the Truth and the Life.
