David Havir, commenting on the concept in Titus 1:15, that to the pure all things are pure, but to the defiled, all things are defiled, asks whether God would consider us pure. There will come a time when our cumulative character will solidify, and we will have no further opportunity to repent. Even though we have done good works throughout our lives, as had Job, we are obligated to seek continual repentance. We must be careful which lens or paradigm into which we fit our life’s experiences because it will determine how we process our outlook. Our past experiences can profoundly change our behavior. We have to be careful about urban legends that we know are true, but really aren’t true. Being a believer does not qualify us as an expert on anything. We must be humble enough to learn things from non-believers, both positive and negative lessons. Being blessed does not make us better. We need to learn from mistakes, wounds, and pain. We need to be able to change the filter we use to enable us to process life’s experiences, changing hurtful or bad experiences to healing or positive experiences, overcoming evil with good. We need to cultivate a habitude of prudence and avoid gullibility and simplicity, realizing that we must be wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove, continually being circumspect. One of the most practical tools of overcoming is to carefully monitor what goes into our senses.
