Stan West, reflecting on questions people have about the nature of God, maintains that it is impossible to comprehend the full extent of the subject. Ideas advanced about the nature of God has hopelessly split or divided people. The apostle Peter, in what Barclay calls the ladder of virtues, recommends a series of interrelated steps leading to the knowledge of God. Without these rungs or interconnections (virtue, self-control, perseverance, brotherly kindness, and agape love) knowledge can abuse. Satan has a great deal of spiritual knowledge, and he is also composed of spirit, but his goal is to murder and destroy. Satan’s ministers have wrested scripture to hurt people, confusing people as to the accurate nature of God. If we ascend this ladder of virtues, we will incrementally take on God’s nature. Samuel, having God’s gift of perceptivity (the ability to look beyond surface appearances) right into the heart, was able to correctly choose the next king of Israel. It is better to acquire God’s nature than to have a comprehensive knowledge of the nature of God.
