Neil McIver, focusing on Matthew 9:35-38, expounds on the concept of the spiritual harvest, reminding us that the harvest may be plentiful, but the workers employed to gather the harvest are few. A recent poll indicated that 33% of Americans are un-churched, while 20% of those attending believe that just living a good life will earn them “their place in heaven.” Consequently 50% of the people we come in contact with each day have probably put their spiritual lives in jeopardy. Jesus Christ wants us to see the spiritual harvest through His eyes, having the same compassion and concerns for their deep spiritual needs. Many people have their physical needs taken care of, but they inwardly have turmoil, fear, and desperation. Can we respond to them as Jesus Christ does, seeing their vast potential if they would come to repentance? Jesus has called His disciples to be fishers of men. We must continually pray that the Lord of the harvest would send more laborers into the field, to help prepare the soil, sow the seed throughout the entirety of the field, cultivate the rows removing the weeds and thorns, fertilize the seeds or plants, and ultimately participate in the picking. Without sowing seed, there will never be a harvest.
