Dave Havir, reflecting on the climactic statement in Genesis 50:20, “although you meant it for evil,” concludes that both Joseph and his brothers were in for a big surprise, that God had intended the entire series of events to save many people. Joseph realized that evil events could be manipulated by God to have a positive result. Favoritism, pride, jealousy, hatred, and anger fill the lives of our patriarchs and their families. The hatred engulfing Joseph’s brothers became so intense that they sold him into slavery. Joseph’s attempts to live righteously led to a prison sentence, but ultimately into a role in the administrative hierarchy of Egypt, making him a virtual savior of his people. When we go through fiery trials, we need to look to the ultimate good it may bring ourselves and others. God is aware of the evil that occurs to us. We should have positive expectation that God will eventually make it right for us now and in the life to come. God may be tweaking or observing, but He is always involved. Our journey on this earth is a learning experience and is only a blip in eternity; we need to make use of the precious moments we have to learn skills and maturity that will last. If we couple the mind God has given us with God’s Holy Spirit, we develop the spiritual backbone to weather the trials. When people do evil against us, we can trust God to turn the events around for our good, either in this life or the life to come.
