David Havir focuses on the topic of being thankful for the influence of God the Father and Jesus Christ in our lives, and then being thankful for our family. Marriage can be a tremendous blessing, but it takes a great deal of work to make it a blessing. Parents, children, and siblings can be a blessing, but if God’s laws are not applied, they can be a source of grief. Family members can be a real source of trial to us—sometimes because of obeying God, but sometimes because of our own stupidity. We should repent of the mistakes we have caused ourselves, and endure those trials we did not cause. We must serve the needs of one another. Fathers can learn to be good providers as well as emulating their wives as nurturers. Mothers can learn to be good nurturers as well as emulating their husbands as providers. Grandparents must learn to provide an inheritance and a spiritual legacy to their offspring, despite the fact that our current government is obsessed with destroying this capacity. Grandparents should develop a special relationship with their grandchildren, being swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath. We need to treasure our long-time friends, praying for them, showing responsiveness to their needs as they do for us, sharpening them as they sharpen us, realizing that before we can criticize them, we must thoroughly understand them.
