Dale Atteberry, reflecting on some scriptural references to work, suggests that works are inseparable from faith. As a matter of fact, faith without works is dead. From a poem titled “Good Sam Mary,” examples of good deeds are attributed to a generous widow lady, whose generosity did not make people feel like helpless welfare victims. We need to demonstrate our serving by deeds and not words, disregarding or being unmindful of public acclaim. We need to look for concrete ways to serve, such as visiting widows or orphans, taking groceries to people, writing notes and cards, paying for a soldier’s meal, or just greeting people at the door. We should not be afraid of hugging people. God expects us to do good works, making things better for other people. Doing these charitable works promotes the quality of our eternal inheritance or reward.
