JL Roden poses the question, Does God speak to people today? During Old Testament times, God did speak to some of the patriarchs and luminaries directly and others through messengers or simply a voice. To the prophets, God sometimes spoke through visions, dreams, or thought impulses. An angel appeared to Zacharias, telling him he would have a son. Likewise, Mary and Joseph had direct communications from angelic beings. Paul’s conversion on the Road to Damascus was accompanied with a blinding light. The apostle John received communication both from an angel and a vision. Several of the disciples of Jesus witnessed the spectacle of the transfiguration. Jesus Christ promised His disciples the Holy Spirit, coupled with the written Word of God which would serve as the current conduit of communication. The Day of Pentecost was accompanied by visual and audio phenomena resembling flames of fire and rushing wind. God probably will use dreams and visions to communicate again, but these should square with the extant teachings of the scriptures.
