Bernie Monsalvo, reflecting on a movie depicting the escape of Jews from Bel Russia, suggests that the greatest escape in the history of mankind was not the exodus of our forebears out of Egypt, but rather what this exodus symbolized—our release from the bondage of our sins and its horrendous consequences. At the ceremony of the Passover, we demonstrate our willingness to yield to the terms of the New Covenant. The Feast of Unleavened Bread was given as an everlasting ordinance, enforced with major consequences. This event depicts the dramatic deliverance of our forebears from the land of Egypt and for us, the deliverance from sin. While leaven pictures sin, unleavened bread depicts righteousness and truth. We need to respond to God with gratitude and eagerness to follow His lead. We have been taken out of sin; sadly the sin may not have entirely left us. We dare not long for the good old days which were not so good in the first place. Putting away sin should be a lifelong process. Even while we were still in our sins, before we ate one crumb of unleavened bread, Jesus died for us.
