Dave Havir, identifying four valuable lessons we can learn from the Days of Unleavened Bread, reminds us that deleavening was a reaction rather than a proactive process of laboriously or legalistically looking for crumbs. Deleavening was originally a response to the haste in getting out of Egypt—or perhaps the reaction to grace. Because God brought us out of bondage, He has expectations from us. Too often, some people glom onto “cheap grace,” thinking that sinning brings out the righteousness of God. We are obligated to do good works (Ephesians 2:10) derived from obedience to God’s Law, but we are not “saved” by good works. We symbolically view leaven as sin because of certain grounds of comparison, namely the proclivity to mushroom out of control. What we do in small ways multiplies. It takes time to develop both good and bad habits. Whatever we can overcome helps our relationship with God. We need to remember Christ’s resurrection, focusing as much upon the event as His death.
