Reg Killingley, reflecting on the British royal wedding, suggested that we might feel reminded of the Marriage of the Lamb in the future when Christ will marry His affianced bride, His chosen church. The Archbishop of Canterbury suggested that marriage was an institution which focused on the responsibility of husband and wife to help one another, supplying what the other partner lacked. Human beings need help in every stage of our lives. During the first third of our life we need a lot of help; a newborn baby is literally helpless. Studies have shown that the brain is not fully matured until age 25. Levites were commissioned for duties from age 20-50. The last third of our lives, as our sensory organs begin to fade, we need help again. Often, the older citizens can offer help the younger, based on their experience. The kernel of Christianity is based on service and help to others. Nature offers many examples of species working together for survival, demonstrating altruistic behavior. We receive help, enabling us to help others. Two are better than one; if one falls, the other can assist. Interdependency works better than total independence.
