Dave Havir analyzes the human nature trait of grumbling and murmuring. Even after the awesome display of miracles, our forbears could not seem to control their tongues, which were actually motivated by their evil, ungrateful hearts and minds. The tongue mirrors the contents of the hearts. We have to learn not to, as Stephen Covey warns us, be reactive people, being subject to people, events, or environmental factors, for the way we feel. We must learn to control our responses, focusing on the spiritual things which will really help us. There will be times we will be around wolves, requiring that we become wise as serpent, being able to recognize evil and to meticulously count the cost of various aspects of our physical and spiritual journeys, avoiding the pitfalls of la-la land and unrealistic expectations. We need to think of true, honest, and pure things, deriving courage from the Scriptures. Our inner character can be cushioned and insulated from the traumas we receive from hurtful experiences. We cannot live our lives spewing out poison stemming from our perceived hurtful experiences. We need to ruminate about our physical and spiritual blessings, meditating on the positive aspects of our lives, including the people who have helped us process good and bad experiences. We should thank God for our emotional and intellectual capacities, our educational opportunities, our possessions, our lessons from marriages, and our knowledge of spiritual promises. This positive meditation should prevent us from grumbling and murmuring.
