Bernie Monsalvo, reminding us that the Day of Pentecost has to be calculated by all of us and cannot be fixed on the Gregorian calendar, affirms to us that in four more weeks and one day Pentecost will again be here. During the first Pentecost, people miraculously heard the Word of God spoken in their own native tongue by heretofore monolingual Galileans. Detractors accused the disciples of public intoxication. Peter explained to the crowd that it represented a fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy of the pouring out of God’s Holy Spirit. Ironically, the charge of drunkenness more described the scoffers, who resemble the calloused religious leaders condemned by Joel for metaphorically being drunk on new wine while the land is devastated before them. Peter, in his Pentecost sermon, was able to explain the prophecy of Joel as well as charge members of the crowd for their culpability in crucifying their Savior. The time will come when God’s Spirit will be poured out on all flesh.
