David Maas contends that we experience difficulty in overcoming because we fall victim of the I.F.D. disease: Idealism/Frustration/Despair, setting our spiritual goals in vague, immeasurable objectives. We need to set bite-sized incremental spiritual goals, concentrating on the here and now; overcoming is a ‘now’ activity. If we do not see the little pictures, we will never attain the big picture. Motivational expert Paul Meyer counsels us that success is the day-by-day realization of a worthwhile, predetermined goal. What could be a more worthy goal than becoming a member of the God family? This dazzling goal can only be realized by the cumulative results of many small achievements. Break complex task into increments * Climbing windmill * Dave Havir * Die daily * Eating a car * Edgar Guest * I Corinthians 15:21 * Frustration * Galatians 5:22-23 * Generic all-purpose petitions * Good Samaritan * I.F.D. disease Idealism/Frustration/Despair * I’d rather see a sermon * James 1:27 * Live in the present * John Goddard * Live in day-tight compartments * Luke 9:23; 10:25-26 * Matthew 5:48; 6:31-34 * Meaningful days * O= M/G * Overcoming * Perfection * Philippians 1:6 * Prayer as incense * Psalm 141:2 * Publishing a book * Pulling cockleburs * Rabbi Meir Kahane * Renew day by day * II Corinthians 4:16 * Self-examination * Sir William Osler * Take up cross daily |
