Dave Havir, reiterating how the arrogant king of Assyria had to be taken down a few pegs by Almighty God, now continues the story with Jonah’s commission to go to Nineveh to proclaim the dire consequences which would occur if they would not repent. We need to be skeptical of those self-proclaimed representatives of God. Occasionally, the fulfillment of a prophetic curse can be delayed, but grace will not indefinitely delay it. When we fast for the sins of the nation, we should begin with our own confession before praying for other people’s sins. Nineveh’s temporary reprieve derived from the sincerity of the repentance. God honors genuine repentance.
