Reg Killingley, suggesting that while the particular details of historical events are markedly different, asserts that certain patterns or parallels do tend to recur or repeat. The initial fulfillment of Elijah appearing before the Day of the Lord was the ministry of John the Baptist. A prophet like Moses was designated in Deuteronomy 18:15. Both Elijah and John the Baptist fulfilled this role, turning the hearts of the people back to God. There were distinct parallels between Moses and his successor Joshua, and Elijah and his successor Elisha. Joshua means “the Lord is salvation” and Elisha means “God is salvation.” The successors were officially and publically commissioned by God. Both Elisha and Joshua's credentials were dramatically backed up by God's fierce judgments. The parting of the Red Sea by Moses parallels the parting of the Jordan by Joshua. This pattern recycles with Elijah and Elisha. Elisha, with the feeding of the large crowd, and his role in the healing of Naaman, served as a type of the far greater ministry of Jesus Christ. Elisha's superior spiritual sight anticipates the far greater spiritual vision of Christ. Elisha and Jesus demonstrate that “little things” also display God's care for us.
