Dave Havir, after looking back on the historical context of the Feast of Trumpets, focuses on future applications of this event, including world war, the Kingdom of God, and a call to action. The trumpet historically has been used to muster troops to war. The book of Revelation depicts many future occurrences of horrible war and conflict. The system of the anti-Christ will wage war against the forces of Jesus Christ. The horrendous events of the seven trumpets usher in the establishment of God’s Kingdom, a time when the first fruits will serve under Jesus Christ. In the meantime, we need to exercise vigilance and watchfulness, filling our vessels with the oil of God’s Holy Spirit, staying faithful over what has been entrusted to us, performing concrete deeds of service, overcoming evil with good in our little world. The trumpet represents a call to action to perpetually do the right thing. We cannot regretfully or ruefully look to the past, but must look to the future, striking out the words “if only” with “next time.”
