Dave Havir, having recently viewed a PG-13 movie in which the producer purposed to cast Christians as looking like rank idiots, focuses on the subject, Walk as Children of Light, with the view to guarding against progressive secularist stereotypes of judgmental, bigoted Christians. We have to bear God's name responsibly, being confident in the Lord—without arrogance, being discerning—without condemnation, and focusing on the weightier matters of the law: judgment, mercy and faith, remembering to walk as children of light. We were not called because of our wisdom, but because of God's mercy in order to confound the mighty by reflecting God's way of life. We are saved and justified by grace. We need to behave with humility, resisting any temptation to pride, reflecting God's light. If we remember that we are sinners, it will take the arrogance and condemnatory attitude away. That does not stop us from developing a keen sense of discernment. We can discern bad behavior without condemning. As mature Christians, we are mandated to discern good from evil, clean from unclean, sacred from profane, becoming angry, but without sin. We need to sharpen our ability to discern, but dull our tendency to superciliously condemn. We need to be confident in the Lord without arrogance, humbly reflecting the light of God.
