Neil McIver, cuing in on the lyrics to the song He is here, affirms that he intends to probe into the identity of Jesus Christ, including His role as the metaphorical Vine. The three elements of the John 15 analogy are God the Father (the Vinedresser), the True Vine (Jesus Christ), and us (the branches encouraged to bear much fruit. While Physical Israel is called the vine, she is often chastised for yielding no fruit or inferior fruit, while the Israel of God bears superior fruit as it is connected to the True Vine. Abiding in faith and love is displayed by obedience and good works (the fruit of the spirit). If we don’t bear fruit, we will be pruned, allowing the remaining branches to bear fruit. The tares among the wheat are the darnell, which looks like wheat until the harvest. The wheat head at harvest time bows it’s head in humble submission, while the darnell- a small poisonous seed does not bend. If anyone eats darnell, they will experience sleepiness and craziness. Fortunately, the darnell is blown out the back of the combine. The discipline, trials and chastisement we receive resemble the pruning the vinedresser performs on the branches. God, as the source of fruit, produces fruit in us by means of our prayers, shaping it by love, resulting in joy and the glorification of God. We need to continue to abide in Christ, allowing God the Father to prune us, enabling the primary fruit to thrive, mimicking Christ.
